The quote I chose from Daisy Miller captures an important element in both the painting and the book. In this painting by William Glackens, a wealthy women is sitting to the left of a man in a suit with a drink in his hand. They are both facing forward. The man is leaning toward and focusing on the women, while the women is looking away from him. It seems that the man is trying to entertain her, but she continues to look disinterested. In the novel, Daisy is always looking for something new and exciting. When she first meets Winterbourne, Winterbourne tries very hard to impress her and she gives off this same sense of boredom or disinterest. However, he finally captures her attention and she appears glued to whatever he talks about. The problem with Daisy is that once she looses this interest that fascinates her so, she looks for it in another man. If she isn't thoroughly entertained, then she just moves on. The women is the painting seems to have the same characteristic.
